Because it is such a challenging task, we have put together a list of things that most piano owners wish they knew before a moving piano.
Plan Ahead: When transferring a piano, advance planning is essential. Choose the most efficient path for moving the piano while making sure it can pass through all doors, hallways, and staircases.
To ensure a smooth transition, measure the piano and the new location. Make sure to work with the movers to plan the move date far in advance.
Measure the Piano and the planned space to be certain the instrument will fit properly.
Remove the Legs, Other Components
Some pianos allow the pedal rods to fold up while the rest of the pedals can be removed. Either way, you want to remove what you can and secure the other components once you start covering up the casing of the grand piano.
Cover the Piano Body with Blankets
Drape the body of the piano with blankets and secure them with ratchet straps. In this case, the ratchet straps might work better than moving rubber bands since grand piano bodies have irregular shapes.
Use Proper Equipment
Using specialized equipment, such as dollies and straps, is essential to move the piano safely and securely. Furniture dollies or straps may not be strong enough to handle the weight of the piano, which could cause damage.
Do your homework:
How many steps will movers need to navigate—on both ends of the move?
Will they need to put the piano into an elevator? If so, how big is the elevator?
Are there any tight corners the movers need to know about?
And (if moving out of the area), how far away is your new destination?
